Public employees
State, county, city, school district and public safety benefits are not one program. They vary by employer, plan and job. This page gives you the questions that get a straight answer.
The short answer
It depends on your employer and the plan documents. Nobody can answer it from the outside.

Cornerstone Capital is an independent life insurance brokerage, not an employer, plan administrator or insurer. Approval is never guaranteed.

The short answer
Public employee life insurance is set by each employer, retirement system and, often, a collective bargaining agreement. Some plans continue coverage into retirement, some reduce it, some end it, some offer conversion or line-of-duty benefits. The only reliable answer is in your plan's certificate or booklet.
That is not a reason to worry. It is a reason to ask six specific questions, once, and write down the answers.
The questions are the same for every public employer. Pick yours and keep the checklist below for your HR or benefits office.
What is the coverage amount, and where is it written?
Ask for the answers in writing, from the certificate, the plan booklet or the benefits office. These six cover most of what matters.
If you retired tomorrow, what would your coverage be on the first of next month?
Take the answers above and run one scenario: the month after you retire. What amount is left, what does it cost, and does it still cover the people who depend on you? If the answer is fine, you are done. If not, you know the gap before it matters.
Would a pension survivor option and a death benefit do the same job?
A survivor option on a pension pays monthly and usually lowers your own pension. Life insurance pays a lump sum to people you choose. They solve different problems, and the trade-off between them is worth looking at with numbers from your own plan.
