Resources for Veterans and Military Families
A plain-language map of the VA and military programs people count on, what each one actually pays, and how to check what you have. Different programs solve different problems.
The short answer
A home loan guaranty, a life insurance policy and a survivor benefit are three different things.
Source: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Home Loan Guaranty Buyer's Guide (see page 48), April 2022.
Cornerstone Capital is an independent life insurance brokerage, not the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, any military branch, or a government agency. We do not administer VA or FEGLI benefits.

The short answer
The VA home loan guaranty protects the lender, and VA says it does not pay off the loan if the veteran dies. SGLI and VGLI are life insurance with their own amounts, deadlines and beneficiaries. Survivor benefits such as DIC are monthly payments with their own eligibility rules.
Each can be valuable. None of them is automatic for every family. The useful question is which ones you actually have today, for how much, and who they pay.
Pick the closest one. Each opens the page or the questions that fit. Nothing here is an application.
Are you counting on a benefit that pays monthly, or a death benefit paid to someone you choose?
A loan guaranty is a promise to a lender. It lets many veterans buy a home with better terms, and it matters if a loan defaults. It is not a death benefit.
Life insurance pays a lump sum to the beneficiaries you name. SGLI, VGLI and an individual policy all do this, on different terms.
Survivor compensation such as DIC is a monthly VA payment to eligible survivors. It depends on the cause and timing of death and on survivor status.
What paperwork would you hand your spouse to show the benefit amount?
A family under stress should not have to reconstruct a benefit from memory. The documents that matter are the coverage amount and beneficiary records for SGLI or VGLI, any individual policy contract, and the mortgage statement.
Would you rather confirm the details while options are open, or after a deadline?
After separation, SGLI continues for 120 days. Converting SGLI to a permanent individual policy without proof of good health must happen within that same 120 days. VGLI must be applied for within 1 year and 120 days, and within the first 240 days no proof of good health is needed.
If you have health conditions, those windows can be the most valuable thing on this page. VA itself encourages using them.

The VA guaranty does not pay off the loan if the veteran dies. A surviving spouse or other coborrower keeps making payments; with no coborrower the loan becomes an obligation of the estate. VA notes that mortgage life insurance must be bought from private sources.

Apply for VGLI within 1 year and 120 days of leaving service. Within the first 240 days, no proof of good health is needed. Coverage cannot exceed the SGLI amount at separation, lasts for life while premiums are paid, and is priced by age band. Below the maximum, $25,000 can be added 1 year after getting VGLI and every 5 years after, up to $500,000, until age 60. It can be converted to an individual permanent policy, such as whole life.

VA points people with health conditions to the no-health-proof windows: about 8 months (240 days) for VGLI, 120 days for converting SGLI to a permanent policy.

DIC is a monthly payment to eligible survivors. A surviving spouse may qualify if the service member died on active duty or in qualifying training, or the veteran died from a service-connected condition, or in some cases after a long period of total service-connected disability. It is not a lump-sum death benefit, and not every family qualifies.
